As the
men of my village leaned
down with
their spears pointed at the center of the circle, Aller-Manuguak and another
runner rushed straight at the lion.
My father
was a policeman, but early in the morning before he went to work the burning sun was very high in the sky, he and my
mother would take Tabithia and me with them while they worked in the garden
they had not far from our house.
Those beliefs
still remain when I was a child, even in the cities
like Juba.
I heard
a huge crackling sound like some giant tree being separated in the forest.
We had
nothing to eat for a long time until Abraham found pumpkin and a plant that looked similar to an onion.
The group that joined us began to reduce away.
We watched that big long snake crawl away, but luckily it wasn’t poisonous.
She was shaking, but she slowly,
quietly camouflaged
into the bushed to hide.
Most of the people in my group got
it at some time or other, because mosquitoes carry it and they always are following us.
The strange thing was that the
whole terrible attack scared my sickness away, and I was able to keep going, even
when we had to cross a muddy area, where we sank up to out knees and the elders
had to drag us kids through the tiny opening.
Men from the SPLA were there, and
the villages gave us milk and grain which we could eat and a grain which syrup is made of.
If we made it that far , the chasing armies would not follow us.
The truck bounced and shook us along some very bad roads, but we arrived safely at Kakuma.
Food was not enough, but we shared what he had with other
members of the group.
